My Butterfly Home – July 2008
My Butterfly Home
Commissioned by Kildare County Council for The Riverbank Centre in Newbridge
“My Butterfly Home” is about the transformative potential of an industrious material and applying it to the space to create a unique, organic feel from the material’s properties. This suspended site specific permanent installation directs the viewers attention upwards. The combined use of acrylic and mirrors results in a play with colour and light reflections. I chose translucent fluorescent plastics, that had an interesting iridescent edge which illuminated with the slightest light.
The butterflies are suspended from the ceiling at varying heights, beginning large at the front of the room, gradually getting smaller before ending in a nest/cluster hanging over the stairwell, creating the illusion of distance in a fixed space.
